In my 25+ years as a qualified counsellor I have worked in various disciplines; High schools, Children’s Social care, private sector family support and more recently working with children at risk of permanent exclusion aged 4-12 (Primary years).
Being a single parent of 2 children for many years, I sometimes wish I could have the time back again with the knowledge I have now!
I have undertaken training in many subjects within my working life and delivered training to groups in both the public and private sector and schools. Training as diverse as, ‘Safeguarding children and vulnerable adults’, to ‘Not suitable for Microwave cooking’ (My own take on how to accommodate a neuro diverse child in a mainstream school).

I firmly believe our children are growing up in a very different environment to the one their teachers and parents grew up in – certainly very different from the one I grew up in.
We need to help children to find the tools to be successful in an everchanging and unpredictable environment. Insisting on them doing it the way we did it, just makes it harder for everyone.
During 2024 I decided to explore writing a tips and advice service for parents. It is based on my vast experience of working with, and being enthralled by our amazing, wonderful, with sometimes less predictable responses from our children and young people as they try and navigate the changes within their own environments.
I have learnt so many tips and shortcuts for managing relationships with children over recent years, and I wanted to pass these on, whilst I can, to as many people as possible.
I have placed them on YouTube under the title:
“Insights – the mind of a child in today’s world.’’
The insights are free and based on the understanding of how to support children using positive language which is easy to access in the moment and produces calm, productive outcomes both for the adult and our children and young people.
